It is a premier training institute under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India.
It was established in January 2009, and is located in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
Its main objective is to strengthen the statistical system in India and promote statistical capacity building.
Under this, training is provided to central and state government officials, researchers, academicians and other related stakeholders.

To make government officials and statisticians proficient in data collection, analysis and interpretation.
To make trainees aware of the latest techniques and methods in the field of statistics at national and international level.
To prepare accurate and high quality statistical data, which will strengthen evidence-based policy making.
To encourage new research related to statistical science and ensure effective use of data in various government schemes.
To promote statistical training and research in collaboration with various national and international organizations.
