Why in News?
The 20th Foundation Day of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was celebrated on October 28, 2024.
The theme of this year's Foundation Day is - 'Empowering communities to reduce disaster risk through awareness for behavior change'.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
The National Disaster Management Authority, headed by the Prime Minister of India, is the apex body for disaster management in India.
Establishment – Year 2005
It was established under the Disaster Management Act 2005
It functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs
The National Disaster Management Authority has five major divisions –
Policy and Planning Division
Mitigation Division
Operations Division
Communication and Information Technology Division
Administration and Finance Division
It is the apex governing body responsible for formulating, implementing and implementing policies, plans and guidelines for disaster management.
Functions
Laying down policies in relation to disaster management.
Approving the National Plan.
Approving plans prepared by Ministries or Departments of the Government of India in accordance with the National Plan.
Laying down the guidelines to be followed by the State Authorities in preparing the State Plan.
Laying down guidelines for integrating disaster prevention or mitigation measures in their development plans and projects by the various Ministries or Departments of the Government of India.
Coordinating the promotion and implementation of policy and plan for disaster management.
Rendering assistance to other countries affected by major disasters as determined by the Central Government.
Taking measures as may be necessary for disaster prevention or mitigation or preparedness and capacity building for dealing with disaster situations or disasters.
