Why in the news?
- Recently, the 60th Raising Day celebration of Border Security Force (BSF) was organized.
- It was organized in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Border Security Force (BSF)
- BSF is a central armed police force.
- It was established on December 1, 1965 after the Indo-Pakistani War.
- It functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- The BSF Act was passed by Parliament in the year 1968.
- Section 139 (1) (i) of the BSF Act, 1968 empowers the Central Government to confer powers and duties on the members of the force in relation to any Central Act for the purposes specified therein.
Powers of BSF
- BSF has the following powers within its jurisdiction-
- Power of search and seizure in the following cases-
1. Drug trafficking
2. Smuggling of other prohibited items
3. Illegal entry of foreigners
4. Offense punishable under any other Central Act
- BSF has the right to conduct only “Preliminary Inquiry”.
- It is mandatory to hand over the suspected person to the local police within 24 hours.
