Why in News?

  • Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal launched the 8th edition of National Programme for Organic Production.

Key Points:

  • Organic Promotion Portal unveiled during the event.
    • It will provide greater visibility and ease of operations for organic stakeholders.
  • TraceNet 2.0 was also unveiled.
    • It is an advanced online traceability system for seamless operations.
    • It will ensure transparency, traceability and compliance for organic agriculture and processed food products from farm to market.

National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP):

  • Launched in: 2001
  • Launched by: Ministry of Commerce, Government of India
  • It is a flagship government programme that strengthens India’s organic certification system.
  • It promotes sustainable farming practices and opens up new opportunities for farmers and exporters.
  • Its objectives:
    • To establish national standards for organic agriculture.
    • To make the certification process of organic products transparent and reliable.
    • To promote the export of organic products in the domestic and international market.
    • To protect the environment and conserve natural resources.

Organic Farming:

  • It is a natural agricultural system, in which farming is done through organic and natural methods instead of using chemical fertilizers, pesticides and synthetic products.
  • Its objective is to preserve the environment, increase soil fertility and provide healthy and safe food products.

Important information:

  • Sikkim is the first state in India and the only state in the world where completely organic farming is done.
  • The World Book of Records London has recognized Sikkim as 'the world's first organic state'.
