Why in the news?

• Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit.

Key Points:

• The 21st ASEAN-India Summit was held on 10 October 2024 in Vientiane, Laos.
• The ASEAN-India Summit was hosted by Laos, the current chair of ASEAN.
• The East Asia Summit (EAS) was attended by 10 member countries of ASEAN and eight partner countries - Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the US.

ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)

• It is a regional organization of Southeast Asian countries.
• It was established on 8 August 1967.
  • 8 August is celebrated as ASEAN Day.
• The main objective of this organization is to promote political, economic, security and socio-cultural cooperation among the countries of South East Asia.
• Its motto is 'One Vision, One Identity, One Community.
• Its secretariat is in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
• Currently, ASEAN has 10 member countries –
  • Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
