Awareness campaign about Dyslexia

Why in news?

  • Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament, India Gate and other government offices have been illuminated in red to create awareness about Dyslexia.
  • The campaign aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma and eliminate discrimination about the disease.
  • Walk4Dyslexia was also organised from Vijay Chowk to India Gate to spread the message of inclusion.
    • This walk is a symbol of collective action for Act4Dyslexia.
    • It emphasises the need for equal opportunities and support for persons with learning disabilities.

What is dyslexia?

  • Dyslexia is a common learning disorder.
  • People suffering from it have trouble in reading and manifesting related skills.
  • Dyslexia Day is celebrated every year on 8 October.
  • It is observed as International Dyslexia Awareness Month every year in October.
  • International Dyslexia Awareness Month is celebrated every year in October.
  • The film ‘Taare Zameen Par’ is based on dyslexia.

Symptoms of dyslexia in children:

  • Delay in speaking.
  • Difficulty pronouncing words (pronunciation problems)
  • Difficulty remembering the names of letters, numbers and colors.
  • Despite being able to perform normal math calculations, have difficulty with word problems.

Treatment:

  • Talk to a healthcare provider if you notice early symptoms.
  • Currently, no medication can cure dyslexia.
  • Instead, educational interventions can teach new effective ways to learn and read.
  • Prepare an individualized education plan in collaboration with your child’s school.
  • Children suffering from this can work with a trained specialist to learn new reading skills.
  • The most important thing you can do is; Spend time reading aloud with your child.
  • Dyslexia is not something your child has control over; be patient and supportive.
