  • What is it: ‘Bharat Seed Brand’ is a consolidated brand of seeds of various crops provided by the Government of India.

Bharat-Seed-Brand

  • ​​Use: Under this brand name, Indian Seed Cooperative Societies Limited (BBSSL) produces, procures and distributes quality seeds to improve crop yield.
  • Objective: The primary objective of the Bharat Seed Brand is to improve crop yield by providing quality seeds to farmers.
  • Distribution Network: The seeds are distributed through the cooperative network.

About Indian Seed Cooperative Societies Limited

  • Establishment: It was established in the year 2003 under the Multi State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 by the Ministry of Cooperatives.
  • Objective: To produce, procure and distribute quality seeds under a single brand 'Bharat Seeds' through the cooperative network to improve crop yield.
  • Current Status: Till date, 19,674 cooperative societies have become members of BBSSL.
  • BBSSL has also received seed license from Jharkhand Government.
  • Promotion of Bharat Seed Brand: BBSSL has also decided to create awareness about the use and adoption of Bharat Seed Brand quality seeds among small and marginal farmers through the following means:
  • Awareness campaign through social media and website
  • Organizing farmers’ meets at various levels
  • Organizing regional workshops, seminars and conferences
  • Organizing exhibitions and participating in promotional events at national, state and regional levels.

Aspects Related to Quality of Seeds

  • Regulation: The Seeds Act, 1966 has been enacted to regulate the quality of seeds sold in the market; Adequate provisions are available under the Seed Rules, 1968 and Seed (Control) Order, 1983 and related amendments.
  • Basis of Breeder Indent: Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare allocates breeder seeds of various crops to State Governments and private seed companies on the basis of breeder indent received by them one year in advance.
  • Breeder Indent is a document through which State Governments and private seed companies demand breeder seeds for various crops from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare so that they can produce and distribute base and certified seeds to farmers.
  • SATHHI Portal: Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has launched Seed Certification, Traceability and Comprehensive Inventory (SATHHI) Portal for Seed Traceability on 19th April, 2023.
  • This portal ensures effective monitoring, efficiency and transparency covering the seed chain from nucleus-breeder-base-certified seed.
  • The seed chain also involves private agencies including seed dealers and distributors.
