Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launched India’s first indigenous automated biomedical waste treatment plant named ‘Srijanam’ at AIIMS New Delhi.
Developed by CSIR’s National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) in Thiruvananthapuram.
Srijanam:
It is designed to disinfect pathogenic biomedical waste, including blood, urine, sputum and laboratory disposables, without relying on expensive and energy-intensive incinerators.
It also neutralises odours, giving a pleasant aroma to otherwise toxic waste.
It has a total daily capacity of 400 kg, i.e. it can manage a maximum of 400 kg of biomedical waste per day.
National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST):
A premier research institute functioning under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India.
It is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and conducts research in various scientific and technological fields.
Its main objective is to promote research in the areas of green technology, advanced materials, biotechnology, chemical sciences and energy management.
