Bird flu (H5N1) confirmed in pet cats

Why in news?

  • A case of bird flu (H5N1) has been confirmed in cats in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Apart from this, two pet cats have also been found infected in Washington, USA.
  • This virus mainly affects birds.
    • The incidents of its spread to mammals have increased the concern of scientists.

Symptoms of infected cats in Chhindwara and identification of the virus:

  • High fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Extreme lethargy
  • Death within 1-3 days of appearance of symptoms
  • Scientists have identified the virus to be from lineage 2.3.2.1a.
    • This is the strain responsible for poultry infection in India.

Potential risks associated with bird flu:

  • The bird flu virus has been evolving since 1996 and is now spreading from birds to mammals.
  • Human to human transmission has not been reported yet.
  • Ongoing mutations in the virus may increase the risk of a potential pandemic.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO):

  • Avian influenza or bird flu primarily affects birds.
  • Transmission to humans is rare.
  • It can spread through contact with infected animals or contaminated surfaces.

Preventive measures against bird flu:

  • Avoid raw meat and milk – Do not feed raw food to pets.
  • Take care of cleanliness – Wash hands regularly and maintain hygiene.
  • Keep distance from sick animals – Contact a veterinarian if any suspicious symptoms appear.
  • Eat safe food – Eat well-cooked meat and eggs.
  • Avoid infected areas – Avoid visiting places where bird flu cases have been reported.
