Buffer Zone Development Plan

The Madhya Pradesh government has approved the ‘Tiger Reserve Buffer Zone Development Scheme’ for the overall development of the buffer zones of all its tiger reserves.

About Buffer Zone Development Scheme

  • What is buffer zone: The buffer zone under tiger reserves is the area around the main habitat (core area) of tigers which is sensitive for their safety and protection. However, human activities can be conducted to some extent in this area.
  • Objective: The objective of this scheme is to conserve tigers and other wildlife, participation of local communities and maintain environmental balance.
  • Total budget: 145 crore
  • Period: From financial year 2025-26 to 2027-28

Main components of the plan

  • Chain-link fencing: To prevent illegal intrusion into ecologically sensitive areas
  • Development of grasslands: To ensure grazing land for herbivorous wildlife
  • Construction of water sources: Meeting the water needs of wildlife
  • Wildlife conservation and fire safety measures: Prevention and protection of forest fires
  • Health monitoring and treatment of wildlife: Disease prevention and treatment services
  • Skill development training for local communities: For eco-tourism, guiding, handicrafts, etc.
