Why in news?

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is investigating the fire in Devagiri Fort. The Archaeological Survey of India is responsible for the conservation of this fort and regulates its activities under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

Key points about Devagiri Fort

  • Location: Located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) in Maharashtra
    • Devagiri Fort is also known as Daulatabad Fort.
  • Construction: Built in the 12th century by Bhillam V, a ruler of the Yadava dynasty
  • Political importance: Apart from being the capital of the Delhi Sultanate, it was also under the Bahmani Sultanate, Ahmednagar Sultanate, Mughal Empire and Nizams of Hyderabad.
    • In 1327, Muhammad bin Tughlaq named it Daulatabad and shifted his capital from Delhi to here.
  • Major historical structures: Chand Minar, Baradari, Chini Mahal, Rang Mahal and Bharat Mata Mandir
    • Baradari: Favourite summer residence of Mughal emperors
  • Three ramparts: Kalakot, Mahakot and Ambarkot
  • Uniqueness: The fort is considered one of the seven wonders of Maharashtra due to its strategic location and architecture.
