Why in the news?

  • Recently the 'Malabar 2024' naval exercise started in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • This international naval exercise will take place from 8 to18 October, 2024.
  • The naval forces of India, Australia, Japan and the US are participating in this exercise.

Malabar exercise

  • The Malabar exercise started in the year 1992 as an annual bilateral naval exercise between India and the US.
  • Japan joined this naval exercise in the year 2015.
  • In the year 2020, the Australian Navy also participated in the Malabar naval exercise.

Objective of Malabar Exercise:

  • To ensure a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region
  • To promote peace and security for all
  • To showcase strong cooperation, shared values ​​and collective capabilities of the four participating nations
  • Strengthening war-fighting skills through joint exercises at sea
  • To enhance interoperability to undertake advanced maritime operations among the navies of the four nations
