Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the continuation of the supply of fortified rice under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana and other welfare schemes from July 2024 to December 2028.
In April 2022, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had decided to implement the initiative of making fortified rice available across the country in a phased manner by March 2024.
The process of fortifying food has been used as a safe and effective measure to overcome anemia and micronutrient deficiencies in people around the world.
Rice Fortification:
'Rice Fortification' or 'Rice Nutrition' refers to the process of increasing the amount of essential micronutrients such as vitamins or minerals in rice.
Rice is an ideal means for the supply of micronutrients in Indian.
65 percent of the country's population uses rice as a staple food.
Rice fortification involves adding the nutrient-rich part (rice kernel) to regular rice, enriched with micronutrients (iron, folic acid, vitamin B12) as per the standards prescribed by FSSAI.
Various technologies are available for rice fortification such as ‘coating’, ‘dusting’ and ‘extrusion’.
‘Extrusion’ is considered to be the best technology for rice fortification in India.
Under ‘extrusion technology’, micronutrients are mixed with dry rice flour and water is added.
This mixture then goes to a ‘twin-screw extruder’ with ‘heating zones’, which produces uniform and sized grains of rice.
These grains are dried, cooled and then packaged for use.
Fortified rice is packed in bags with an identification mark (‘+F’)
