Why in news?

  • Recently, for the first time, the Great Indian Bustard was born through artificial insemination.
  • It was born at Sudasari Breeding Center in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
  • India is the first country in the world to successfully breed the Great Indian Bustard through this method.

Great Indian Bustard

  • The scientific name of this bird is “Ardeotis nigriceps”.
  • It is the state bird of Rajasthan.
  • It is locally called Godavan.
  • It is known as a health indicator of grasslands or grassland ecosystem.
  • It is the most critically endangered bird in India.
  • It is found throughout western India, in 11 states as well as some areas of Pakistan.
  • Their area extends from the Thar Desert in the north-west of India and the Deccan Plateau of the peninsula.
  • It is found in the desert areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Conservation status:

  • Red List of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN):- ‘Critically Endangered’
  • Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES):- Appendix-1
  • Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS): Appendix-I
  • Wildlife Protection Act, 1972:- Schedule 1
