Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the 55th meeting of the GST Council in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
Major issues related to Goods and Services Tax were discussed in the meeting.
It was attended by the Chief Ministers of Goa, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya and Odisha, Deputy Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana and Finance Ministers of several states and union territories.
About GST Council:
It is a joint forum of the Centre and the states.
It has been established under the provisions of Article 279A of the Constitution.
That is, it is a constitutional body.
Article 279A has been added to the Constitution through the 101st Constitutional Amendment Act, 2016.
Its main function is to make recommendations on issues related to the implementation of GST.
It also decides on various rate slabs of GST.
Its composition:
Chairman: Union Finance Minister.
Members: (Total 33 members, of which 2 members from the Centre and 31 members from States and Union Territories)
Union Minister of State for Finance or in-charge of Revenue.
Minister in-charge of Finance or Taxation or any other Minister nominated by each State Government.
A 3/4 majority of the members present and voting is required for a decision.
