DRDO has launched a new 'Himkavach' uniform for soldiers deployed in extremely cold areas like Siachen and Ladakh.
This uniform is effective in temperatures up to -60°C and has been designed in a modular design.
Himkavach:
Multi-layer system - insulated layer for heat retention and comfort.
Weather friendly - can add or remove layers as per need.
Breathable and lightweight - better comfort and functionality.
Advanced from ECWCS:
Himkavach provides more insulation and protection from cold than the previously used ECWCS system, which will make it easier for soldiers to work in areas like Siachen.
This is a big step developed under the 'Make in India' initiative, which will take the capability and protection of the soldiers to new heights.
Siachen Glacier:
Siachen Glacier is the world's highest and coldest battlefield, where the Indian Army is deployed even in extreme natural conditions.
This glacier is part of the Karakoram range in the Ladakh region of India.
Location: Ladakh, India.
Length: About 76 kilometers, it is one of the longest glaciers in the world.
Altitude: More than 5,400 meters (18,000 feet).
Temperature: -50°C to -60°C in winter
Strategic importance of Siachen:
Siachen Glacier is located near the borders of India, Pakistan and China.
It falls in sensitive areas of the India-Pakistan border.
India established control over it in 1984 under Operation Meghdoot.
The region is strategically important as it is located near the Karakoram Pass, which connects China and Pakistan.
Indian soldiers defend the country here in difficult conditions.
