Reference:

On January 20, 2025, the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced a two gender policy, ending the US government's old policy of more than two genders.

About the two gender policy of America:

  • What is it: After the implementation of the two gender policy, officially only two genders remain in America - male and female.
    • Apart from these two, all other gender identities including third gender such as LGBTQIA+ have been officially abolished by the government.
  • Objective of the policy: To protect the rights of women from the alleged encroachment of gender ideology.
  •  Gender word mandatory: The US government has made it mandatory to use the word gender in all government communications, including official documents like passports and visas.
  • Ban on Gender Identity Initiative: The US government has withdrawn funding and various initiatives that prevent discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
  •  Impact: This could impact the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and reduce the legal and social rights of transgender individuals in particular.

Policy implications of the current policy

Positive:

  • This will reduce federal funding of such organizations in America which take advantage of temporary physical and mental changes in childhood and motivate or confuse them for surgery or hormone therapy.
  • There will be a reduction in the incidents of domestic and workplace harassment of women by transgender men.
  • It will help in preventing transgender athletes from participating in sports under their preferred gender identity.
  • Women's rights to use toilets and bathrooms etc. in public places will be protected.
  • Issues related to inheritance in the family can be simplified.

Negative:

  • However, this policy has ended diversity, equality and inclusion programs. This will hinder the efforts to bring the sensitive section of the society into the mainstream.
  • The ongoing civil protection movement for transgender rights will suffer a setback.
  • The reduction in financial funding is also likely to have a negative impact on federal medical insurance coverage.
  • This policy has restarted the discussion on the balance between gender diversity and civil rights protection.
  • This policy will increase social isolation towards the most harassed and vulnerable transgender community not only in America but globally.
