India becomes chairman of United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs

Why in the news?

• Recently India has been elected to chair the 68th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
• India will chair the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs for the first time.

• The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs is the principal policy-making body of the United Nations on drug-related matters.
• It is one of the functional commissions of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
• It is a governing body of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
• Major functions-
•  Monitoring global drug trends
• Supporting member countries in making balanced policies
• Overseeing the implementation of major international drug conventions
