Indian Navy set to commission Nilgiri, Surat, and Vaghsheer
Why in the news?
The Indian Navy is going to induct two indigenously built warships and a diesel-electric submarine on January 15, 2025.
Two state-of-the-art warships named Surat and Nilgiri and a powerful submarine named Vaghsheer will be inducted at a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
Both the warships and the submarine have been built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.
Surat and Nilgiri have been designed by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy.
They are equipped with advanced sensors and weapon packages developed primarily in India or through strategic collaborations with leading global manufacturers.
They can operate a variety of helicopters.
These include Chetak, Advanced Light Helicopter, Sea King and MH-60R.
Nilgiri (Frigate):
It is the first of the seven frigates being built under ‘Project 17A’.
It has significant stealth features, allowing it to hide from enemy radars.
Surat (Destroyer):
It is the lead destroyer built under Project 15B.
It is an advanced version of the Kolkata class (Project 15A) destroyers.
It has significant improvements in design and capability.
Vaghsheer (Submarine):
It is the sixth model of the Scorpene class submarines, developed under Project 75.
It is one of the world's quietest and versatile diesel-electric submarines.
It is designed to carry out a wide range of missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, area surveillance and special operations.
