Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh launched India's first organic fisheries cluster in Sikkim.
Key Points:
- 50 major projects were inaugurated under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
- The cost of these projects is Rs 50 crore.
- The project covers all the states of the Northeast region except Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
- Objective of these projects:
- To enhance fisheries infrastructure and productivity
- To create employment opportunities in the North Eastern states
- Apart from this, the Union Fisheries Minister launched the country's first 'organic fisheries cluster' in Sikkim.
Country's first organic fisheries cluster:
- Launched India's first organic fisheries cluster in Soreng district of Sikkim under PMMSY.
- It has been launched with the aim of promoting sustainable and eco-friendly fisheries.
- It will play an important role in increasing the income of farmers and promoting sustainability in aquaculture.
- Under this, antibiotic, chemical and pesticide free organic fish will be produced.
- The Sikkim government has already adopted organic farming.
Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY):
- It has been launched with the aim of improving the field of fisheries and aquaculture.
- This scheme was launched in the year 2020 under the Blue Revolution.
- It covers all aspects of fish production, processing, marketing and marketing.
- Goal of PMMSY:
- To achieve 22 million metric tonnes of fish production in the country by 2024-25.
- To double the income of fishermen and fish farmers and create 55 lakh employment opportunities.
- To increase the export of fish and marine products to Rs 1 lakh crore.
