India's first reusable hybrid rocket RHUMI-1

Why in news?

  • Recently India's first reusable hybrid rocket 'RHUMI-1' was successfully launched.

  • It has been developed by the start-up 'Space Zone India' in collaboration with Martin Group.
  • This rocket, carrying 3 CUBE Satellites and 50 Pico Satellites, has been launched in a suborbital trajectory using a mobile launcher.
  • Its goal is to collect data for research on global warming and climate change.
  • It will also promote research in weather, air quality, atmospheric conditions and cosmic and UV radiation.
  • This rocket is equipped with a common fuel-based hybrid motor and electrically triggered parachute deployer.
  • Liquid oxidizer and solid fuel have been used in the engine of this rocket.
  • This will improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Its body is made of carbon fiber airframe.
  • This initiative aims to make space missions more sustainable and cost-effective, reflecting India's growing role in space innovation.
