INS Nirdeshak

Why in the news?

• Recently Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited handed over INS Nirdeshak to the Indian Navy.

INS Nirdeshak :

• It is the second ship in the series of four survey ships built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.
  • The first ship of this class INS Sandhyak was inducted into the Indian Navy on 3 February this year.
• Its displacement is about 3400 tons.
• Its total length is 110 meters.
• It can achieve a speed of more than 18 knots.
• It is powered by two marine diesel engines and fixed-pitch propellers.
• It has been built using 'integrated construction' technology.
• It is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic equipment, such as data acquisition and processing system, long-range positioning system, digital side scan sonar etc.
• It will help in increasing India's maritime power in the Indian Ocean region.
