Why in News?

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the International Methanol Seminar and Exhibition in New Delhi.
  • It was organized by NITI Aayog.
  • The event focused on the role of methanol in the global energy transition.
  • It highlighted the importance of biofuels.
  • Objectives -
    • To achieve energy independence
    • To strengthen the agricultural economy
    • To ensure prosperity of the farmers of India; etc. 

Methanol:

 

  • It is an organic compound; its molecular formula is CH3OH.
  • It is also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha, methyl hydrate, and wood spirit.
  • It is a clear liquid chemical that is soluble in water and is easily biodegradable.
  • Methanol is an alternative fuel.
    • It is used to run cars, trucks, buses, ships, boilers, and cook stoves.
  • It is also used to make plastics, paints, car parts, and building materials.
