Justice V. Ramasubramanian becomes chairman of NHRC
Why in the news?
Recently, former Supreme Court judge Justice V. Ramasubramanian has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.
Justice Ramasubramanian
Justice V. Ramasubramanian was born on 30 June 1958.
He graduated in Chemistry from Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, Chennai and completed his law studies from Madras Law College.
On 31 July 2006, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court and became a permanent judge on 9 November 2009.
On 22 June 2019, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.
On 23 September 2019, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
NHRC is a statutory body established in the year 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
It is a multi-member body, consisting of a Chairman and five full-time members.
The chairperson should be a retired Chief Justice of India or a judge of the Supreme Court.
The members should include a serving or retired judge of the Supreme Court, a serving or retired Chief Justice of a High Court and three persons (at least one of whom should be a woman) having knowledge or practical experience in relation to human rights.
Apart from these, seven ex-officio members are also included in it.
