Why in the news

  • Recently, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has inaugurated the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Observatory at Hanle in Ladakh.

Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Observatory:

  • MACE is the world's highest altitude and Asia's largest imaging Cherenkov telescope.
  • This telescope has been indigenously built by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in collaboration with Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) and other Indian industry partners.
  • The MACE Observatory will help India become a leading country in cosmic-ray research globally.
  • This will help India study high-energy gamma rays, paving the way for in-depth study of the universe.
  • The MACE Observatory will play a vital role in advancing scientific research as well as supporting the socio-economic development of Ladakh.
