Micro-missile system Bhargavastra

Why in the news?

  • Recently India successfully tested its first indigenous micro-missile system Bhargavastra.
  • It was tested at Gopalpur Seaward Firing Range (Odisha).

Bhargavastra:

  • It has been designed to counter the growing threat of drones.
  • It has been developed by Economic Explosives Limited (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Group.

Key features:

  • Ability to detect drones (Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs):
    • Capable of detecting small drones up to 6 km away.
    • Ready to intercept swarms of enemy drones.
  • Multi-layer security:
    • Ability to fire more than 64 micro missiles simultaneously.
    • Use of micro-munitions, which can accurately guide targets.
  • Mobile platform:
    • This system can be installed on a mobile platform.
    • It can be used in all types of terrain (like high mountains, deserts etc.).
  • Economical and effective:
    • Cheap and affordable solution to deal with small drones.
    • Expensive air defense systems can be saved for bigger threats.

Significance:

  • A unique initiative to deal with small and cheap drones.
  • Will ensure the safety of important military structures from enemy drone attacks.
  • This system will be helpful in meeting the current and future needs of the army.
  • Due to Bhargavastra being indigenous, it will promote the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Future prospects:

  • Expansion of the system for the Air Force.
  • Mass production and deployment in the military.
  • Possibility of international export.
