Ministry of Education UDISE Plus Report 2023-24

Why in the news?

  • The Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report has been released by the Ministry of Education.
    • The UDISE+ (2023-24) report has released data about every aspect including enrollment, drop out, school infrastructure.

Enrollment figures:

  • A total of 24.8 crore students have been enrolled in the academic year 2023-24.
    • The total enrollment in the school in 2018-19 was 26.02 crore.
    • In 2022-23, enrollment declined and 25.18 crore students were registered.
    • In 2023-24, the total enrollment declined further and stood at 24.8 crore.
      • There are 37 lakh fewer enrollments in the year 2023-24 as compared to the previous year.
      • This is a decline of 6% (about 1.22 crore students) as compared to 2018-19.

Goal of the new education policy:

  • The new education policy has set a target of 100 percent gross enrollment ratio (GER) from pre-school to secondary (9th to 12th) by 2030.

Category in enrollment:

  • The number of minorities is 20 percent of the total enrollment.
    • Out of this, 79.6 percent are Muslims, 10 percent Christians, 6.9 percent Sikhs, 2.2 percent Buddhists, 1.3 percent Jains and 0.1 percent Parsis.
  • If we look at the national level-
    • Number of general candidates is 26.9 percent
    • 18 percent in SC category
    • 9.9 percent ST
    • 45.2 percent OBC category
  • At the national level, 15.8 percent of the total enrollment from foundational to secondary level are Muslim students.

Dropout figures:

  • The focus of the Union Education Ministry is to reduce the number of school dropouts and bring them back to schools.
  • According to the report, 3.7 percent children leave school at the preparatory level and 5.2 percent by the time they reach middle school. This percentage increases to 10.9 at the secondary level.
  • Due to various reasons, students drop out of school the most between 9th and 12th class.
    • At the secondary level, 20.86 percent children are dropping out in Bihar.

School Infrastructure Statistics:

  • More than 91 percent of schools in India have basic facilities like electricity and toilets.
  • At the same time, facilities like computers, internet are still lacking.
    • Only 57.2 percent of schools have computers and 53.9 percent of schools have internet facilities.
  • Drinking water has reached 98.3 percent of schools.
  • 89 percent of schools have libraries and 82 percent of schools have playgrounds.
