Miyawaki Method

Why in the news?

Recently, Chhattisgarh Forest Department organized a Van Mahotsav program by planting saplings using the Miyawaki method in Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district.

Miyawaki method

  • This is a special method of afforestation.
  • It has been developed by a Japanese botanist named Akira Miyawaki.
  • In this, small plants are planted in small places, which grow ten times faster than ordinary plants.
  • In the year 2014, Miyawaki used this method to create a wall of trees along the seashore of Hiroshima.
  • This not only saved the city from the damage caused by tsunami, but also presented an example to the world that how we can prevent big dangers through these special techniques.
  • In this technique, more than 100 plants can be planted in a strip 2 feet wide and 30 feet long.
  • By planting plants close to each other, they are not affected much by the weather and the leaves of the plants remain green even in summers.
  • Plants planted in less space work like an oxygen bank and also help in attracting rain.
  • A natural forest takes 100 years to grow.
    • In the Miyawaki method, plants have to compete for sunlight so plants grow 10 times faster in this method
