Why in the news?

  • Recently, Mount Semeru volcano located in East Java province of Indonesia has erupted.
  • After this, Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center issued an Orange Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation.
  • This banned flights within a radius of 5 kilometers of the volcano.
  • A 3 km boundary around the volcano has been declared a danger zone.
  • The government has banned residents from engaging in any activity within 500 meters of rivers originating from the slopes of the volcano.

Mount Semeru Volcano:

  • It is an active volcano located in East Java, Indonesia.
  • It is also known as "The Great Mountain".
  • Its height is 3,676 meters.
  • It is one of the 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
  • It is part of the island arc formed as the Indo-Australian Plate subducts beneath the Sunda Plate (part of the Eurasian Plate).
  • The trench formed here is known as the Sunda Trench,
    • The Java Trench is its major section/part.
