Why in News?
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will organize its first National Meteorological Olympiad on January 13.
Key Points:
- The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is completing 150 years of its establishment on January 15.
- To celebrate this occasion, IMD will organize several programs across the country on Foundation Day.
- Organizing its first National Meteorology Olympiad on January 13
- Organizing special function at Bharat Mandapam, Delhi on January 14 and 15
- These programs are aimed at increasing awareness about climate and environment.
National Meteorology Olympiad:
- IMD is organizing the National Meteorology Olympiad (Met-Olympiad) in collaboration with South Asian Meteorology Association and Indian Meteorological Society.
- This competition will provide students an opportunity to test their knowledge, participate in engaging challenges and learn more about meteorology.
- The Olympiad will target students of classes 8th, 9th and 11th.
- It will be conducted at State and National level.
- State winners from each State and Union Territory as well as the National winner will be felicitated for their achievements.
- The winners will also get an opportunity to attend a one day workshop and a presentation at the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of IMD on 15th January 2025 in the presence of esteemed dignitaries at New Delhi.
India Meteorological Department (IMD):
- It is the centre of all meteorological activities in India.
- It works under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
- It was established on 15 January 1875.
- Its main objective is to provide weather forecasts and warnings in the country.
