Pakistan's largest nuclear plant

Why in the news:

Recently, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has given its approval for the construction of the country's largest nuclear power plant to increase electricity production in Pakistan.

About Chashma Nuclear Plant 5 (C-5):

  • Introduction: Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5) will be established as Pakistan's largest nuclear power plant.
    • C-5 is a third generation advanced pressurized water reactor.
  • Location: Mianwali, Punjab, Pakistan
  • Capacity: 1200 MW
  • Plant design: To be prepared by Chinese company Hualong.
  • Cost: US $ 3.7 billion
  • Service life: 60 years
  • Key features:
    • This will be the third nuclear power plant of this design in Pakistan.
    • Two other plants of the same design are already operational, Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 and 3.
  • Total Capacity: The total nuclear power capacity in Pakistan is currently around 3500 MW which is about 27% of the country's total power generation.
