Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project

Why in news?

  • Recently Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commissioned two units of Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project.
  • This project is part of the bilateral agreement between India and Bhutan.
  • It is being developed by the Hydroelectric Project Authority.

Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project:

  • Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project is a joint project of India-Bhutan.
  • It is located in Bhutan.
  • An agreement was signed for this in July 2006.
  • This project is being developed in two phases-
    • 1200 MW Phase-I
    • 1020 MW Phase II
  • This project is being developed on the Punatsangchhu River.
    • It is also known as Sankosh River.
    • This river originates in Bhutan and joins the Brahmaputra River in Assam.
  • The 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project is being constructed in Wangdue Phodrang District of Western Bhutan.
  • It is a run-of-the-river project.

  • It is a premier public sector undertaking of India.
  • It is a pioneer in the design, manufacturing and engineering of power generation equipment and other heavy engineering goods.
  • Established: Year 1964
  • It is today one of the largest electrical equipment manufacturing companies in the world.
