Skill India Programme

Why in the news?

  • Recently, the Union Cabinet has approved the continuation and restructuring of the Central Sector Scheme 'Skill India Program' till the year 2026.
  • The outlay of the Skill India program for the period 2022-23 to 2025-26 is Rs 8,800 crore.
  • The Skill India program now consists of the following three schemes-
    • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0)
    • Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS)
    • Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) Scheme
  • Implemented by the Ministry - Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
    • This ministry came into existence on 9 November 2014

About Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0:

  • It was launched in the year 2015.
  • New versions of this scheme have been launched by the government from time to time based on the needs of the industry and the economy.
  • PMKVY 4.0 was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24.
  • It is being implemented from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2026.
  • The scheme emphasizes on job training, industry partnerships and;
    • Alignment of courses with industry needs.
  • It focuses on new age courses like coding, AI, robotics, mechatronics, IoT, 3D printing, drones and soft skills for Industry 4.0.
