Why in the news?
Little Prespa Lake, located on the border of Albania and Greece, is turning into a marshy lake due to lack of water. In Albania, most of its part has either turned into a marsh or has dried up.
About Little Prespa Lake
- Most of it is located in Greece and its southern tip is located in Albania. It is a long and narrow lake and its average depth is 4 meters.
- It is considered to be a part of the Great Prespa Lake system located in the north, which is located in Albania, Greece and the Republic of Macedonia.
- It is one of the oldest tectonic or tectonic lakes in Europe and is also the highest tectonic lake of the Balkan Peninsula.
- The area where it is located is famous for rocks ranging from the oldest Paleozoic forms to the deposits belonging to the young Neogene era.
- It was formed by the deposition of material from the Agios Germanos stream. The area is a protected habitat as part of the Prespa National Park, while a large part of it is included in the Natura 2000 network.
- Its water flow has decreased due to the diversion of the Devoll River for irrigation by Albania in the 1970s.
