Sonamarg Tunnel Project inaugurated

Why in news?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel Project in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sonamarg Tunnel Project:

• The project, which is about 12 km long, has been constructed at a cost of over Rs 2,700 crore.
• It consists of the Sonamarg main tunnel ('Z-Morh' tunnel), an exit tunnel and access roads.
• It is located at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level.
• It has been built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).

Significance of Sonamarg Tunnel Project:

• It will enhance all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg on the way to Leh.
• It will ensure safe and seamless access to the strategically important Ladakh region.
• It will also promote tourism, adventure sports and local livelihoods by turning Sonamarg into a year-round destination.

Inauguration of ‘Z-Morh’ Tunnel:

• The 6.4 km long double lane tunnel built on Srinagar-Leh Highway NH-1 will connect Srinagar to Sonamarg.
  • This highway remains closed for almost half the year due to snowfall.
• The construction of the tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to the people.
• This two-lane tunnel also includes an emergency escape tunnel, which will be useful in emergency situations.
• The tunnel has facilities like CCTV cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity, and modern ventilation system.
• This tunnel will help in rapid movement of troops to India's borders through Ladakh and Kargil.
