Why in news?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel Project in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sonamarg Tunnel Project:
- The project, which is about 12 km long, has been constructed at a cost of over Rs 2,700 crore.
- It consists of the Sonamarg main tunnel ('Z-Morh' tunnel), an exit tunnel and access roads.
- It is located at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level.
- It has been built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).
New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM):
- It is a modern and flexible technique of tunnel construction.
- It is used to build tunnels in weak or complex geological formations.
- It is also called the "observation method".
- In this method, geological conditions are monitored during the construction process and adjustments are made in the design accordingly.

Significance of Sonamarg Tunnel Project:
- It will enhance all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg on the way to Leh.
- It will ensure safe and seamless access to the strategically important Ladakh region.
- It will also promote tourism, adventure sports and local livelihoods by turning Sonamarg into a year-round destination.
Inauguration of ‘Z-Morh’ Tunnel:
- The 6.4 km long double lane tunnel built on Srinagar-Leh Highway NH-1 will connect Srinagar to Sonamarg.
- This highway remains closed for almost half the year due to snowfall.
- The construction of the tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to the people.
- This two-lane tunnel also includes an emergency escape tunnel, which will be useful in emergency situations.
- The tunnel has facilities like CCTV cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity, and modern ventilation system.
- This tunnel will help in rapid movement of troops to India's borders through Ladakh and Kargil.
- This will strengthen national security.
