Successful test of K-4 missile

Why in news?

  • Recently, Indian Navy successfully tested K-4 missile from INS Arighat.

K-4 missile

  • It is a nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile.
  • It has been developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation.
  • Its strike range is about 3500 km.
  • K-4 is a solid fuel missile.
  • Its length is 10 meters, weight is 20 tonnes and diameter is 1.3 metres.
  • It can carry 2 tonnes of payload.

INS Arighat

  • It is a nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine. 
  • It was built at the Indian Navy's shipbuilding centre in Visakhapatnam.
  • Its length is 111.6 meters, width is 11 meters and displacement is 6,000 tonnes
  • It has a seven-bladed propeller which will be powered by a pressurized water reactor.
  • It can run at a speed of 22 to 28 km/h on the surface and 44 km/h underwater.
  • It can carry torpedoes, landmines and nuclear weapons.
  • INS Arihant is India's first indigenous nuclear submarine.
  • It was inducted into the Navy in the year 2018.
