Supply of Green Ammonia from India to Japan

Why in the news?

• Recently an agreement was signed for the supply of green ammonia from India to Japan.
• The agreement was signed between 4 companies Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Company and NYK Line

Key points of the agreement

• Sembcorp Industries will lead the production of green ammonia in India using renewable energy sources.
• Kyushu Electric Power Company has committed to integrate this green ammonia into its energy mix
  • It will partially replace coal in their thermal power plants in Japan.
• Sojitz Corporation will act as the business intermediary
• NYK Line will oversee the maritime transportation of green ammonia from India to Japan.

Green Ammonia

• Green ammonia is produced using hydrogen obtained from water electrolysis and nitrogen extracted from the air.
  • The production process is 100% renewable and carbon-free.
• It is mainly used in the manufacture of nitrogenous fertilizers such as urea and ammonium nitrate.
• It can also be used for other uses such as a fuel source for power generation and engine operation.
