The only Green School in the Northeast

Why in News?

• Green Carnival and Green School Awards Ceremony 2025 was organised by Centre for Science and Environment.
• PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Namchi, Sikkim was declared the only educational institution to receive the Green School rating from the entire Northeast states.

Green School Awards Ceremony 2025:

• Centre for Science and Environment organises Green Carnival and Green School Awards Ceremony every year.
• The programme aims to engage and encourage young environmentalists from various schools across India.

Green School Audit Process:

• Green School Audit Reports are evaluated and analysed between July and December each year.
• Schools from the Green School Programme Network across all states and union territories of India submit this audit report.
• More than 10,000 schools had submitted Green School Audit Reports this year.
• Schools are awarded marks based on their performance.
• Schools that meet the set criteria are recognised as Green Schools.
• Only 150 schools across India awarded Green School status for session 2024-25.

Criteria for conducting Green School Audit:

• Water: Saving water, reusing water, rainwater harvesting
• Energy: Saving energy, using renewable energy
• Waste: Segregation of waste, recycling, composting
• Biodiversity: Planting trees, caring for plants, preserving wildlife
• Construction: Use of eco-friendly materials
• Education: Environmental education, awareness programmes
