World Association of Zoos and Aquariums

Why in News:

  • Recently, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) has suspended the membership of Delhi's National Zoological Park for six months due to concerns related to the welfare of African elephant 'Shankar'.
  • The African elephant 'Shankar' was gifted by Zimbabwe to the then President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma in the year 1996.
    • Its African partner 'Bombay' died in the year 2005.
  • The suspension of Delhi Zoo's membership means that it cannot participate in conferences or activities organized by WAZA.

About WAZA:

  • WAZA is a non-governmental organization. It sets standards for zoos globally.
  • Founded in 1935, WAZA aims to guide, encourage and support zoos, aquariums and like-minded organisations worldwide in animal care and welfare, environmental education and global conservation.
  • WAZA is a global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquaria dedicated to the care and conservation of animals and their habitats worldwide.
    • Currently around 400 leading institutions and organisations around the world are its members.

  • WAZA promotes cooperation between leading zoos, aquariums, national and regional associations as well as leading wildlife specialists, academies and universities.
  • It provides support for species conservation management and husbandry of animals in care while encouraging the highest standards in member institutions.
  • WAZA partners with leading international conservation organisations that support its members to tackle global issues such as illegal wildlife trade, coral-reef restoration, marine litter, sustainable palm oil and climate change.
