• World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on 23 March.

• World Meteorological Day was started on 23 March 1961.
• This day is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

World Meteorological Organization (WMO):

• Established: 23 March 1950, became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1951.
• Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland
• Member countries: 193 member countries and territories

Objectives:

• Coordination and improvement of global meteorological services
• Cooperation in climate change and disaster management
• Developing forecasting and warning systems for extreme weather events
• Conservation and management of water resources

Major functions:

• Development of weather forecasting services
• Research and policy cooperation on climate change
• Development of a global early warning system
• Promoting scientific and technological cooperation
