3200 Phaethon

  • 3200 Phaethon is classified as an asteroid which is the first asteroid to be discovered via an artificial satellite.
  • It was discovered in October 1983 and is named after Phaethon, a character from Greek mythology who is the son of the sun god Helios.
  • It takes 1.4 years to complete one round of the Sun. As it comes closer to the Sun while orbiting it, the rocks on its surface get heated and break.
  • Geminids (meteor showers) originate from this asteroid.
