  • TRIPS evolved out of the Uruguay Round of ‘General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)’ negotiations.
    • In the year 1995, WTO was established in place of GATT.
    • TRIPS came into force on 1995.
  • It is the most comprehensive multilateral agreement on intellectual property.
    • It provides protection to intellectual property rights by setting minimum standards.
    • Any invention; literary and artistic works; Provides exclusive rights on the use of originality such as design.
    • Copyright, trademark, geographical indication, industrial design, patent are included under this.
