The 'Albino Indian Flapshell Turtle' is a rare species of turtle found in South Asia. It is mainly found in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
It is bright yellow in color. The outer shell of this 30 cm sized turtle is very soft. It is an omnivorous animal. Its main foods are frogs, snails, aquatic plants etc.
Its yellow color is due to a disorder called 'Albinism. Albinism is a congenital disorder, which arises due to the complete or partial absence of an amino acid called 'tyrosine' in the body.
Due to the deficiency of tyrosine, the production of 'melanin' in the skin is affected. It is noteworthy that a pigment called ‘melanin’ determines the color of the skin.
In India, the turtle of this species was first seen in Odisha. Later, its presence was also recorded in West Bengal and Telangana.
