Albino Indian Flapshell Turtle

  • The 'Albino Indian Flapshell Turtle' is a rare species of turtle found in South Asia. It is mainly found in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
  • It is bright yellow in color. The outer shell of this 30 cm sized turtle is very soft. It is an omnivorous animal. Its main foods are frogs, snails, aquatic plants etc.
  • Its yellow color is due to a disorder called 'Albinism. Albinism is a congenital disorder, which arises due to the complete or partial absence of an amino acid called 'tyrosine' in the body.
  • Due to the deficiency of tyrosine, the production of 'melanin' in the skin is affected. It is noteworthy that a pigment called ‘melanin’ determines the color of the skin.
  • In India, the turtle of this species was first seen in Odisha. Later, its presence was also recorded in West Bengal and Telangana.
