Apis karinjodian

  • Apis Carinjodian is a new species of endemic bee discovered in the Western Ghats. This new species has been named Indian Black Honey Bee.
  • This species is found in parts of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu from Central Western Ghats and Nilgiris to South Western Ghats.
  • Its high quantity honey production capacity provides new opportunities for increase in honey production.
  • It is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. With the discovery of this new species, the number of bee species in the world has increased to 11.
