An extremely large ‘Azores High’ has resulted in abnormally dry conditions across the western Mediterranean, including the Iberian Peninsula, primarily occupied by Spain and Portugal, according to a new study.
It is a Subtropical Weather Phenomenon. During winter the subtropical high pressure system extends over the eastern subtropical North Atlantic and western Europe.
It is associated with anticyclonic winds in the subtropical North Atlantic. It is formed by dry air aloft descending the subtropics and coincides with the downward branch of the Hadley Circulation.
It could pose a climate risk to productive agricultural sectors such as viticulture and olive plantations across the Iberian Peninsula.
The Hadley cell, is a tropical atmospheric circulation that features air rising near the equator, flowing poleward at a height of 10-15 km above the earth's surface, descending in the subtropics, and then returning equatorward near the surface.
