Beluga Whale

  • Beluga whales are highly social mammals that hunt and migrate in groups. Their raised head is flexible which is capable of changing shape.
  • Being able to make different types of sounds, they are also called 'canaries of the sea'. They use them for communication in their group.
  • Belugas feed on a variety of fish species as well as shrimp, crabs and molluscs. They are classified as Near Threatened (NT) in the IUCN Red List.
  • Russia has been accused of spying in various countries through this whale species. Norway has named it Hvaldimir.
