Climate Change Performance Index

• Recently the 17th edition of Climate Change Performance Index compiled by Germanwatch along with New Climate Institute and Climate Action Network was released. This index monitors the climate mitigation progress of 57 countries and the European Union.

• Sweden tops the index while the US is ranked lower with 61st rank. However the first three places in the overall ranking are vacant.

• In overall India ranked 10th with a score of 63.98, compared to 9th place last year. India has been categorized as a 'high performer' overall, but in the 'medium' category with respect to renewable energy. India has been able to make top 10 spots for two consecutive years.

• The first three positions are also vacant in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Sweden has topped in this also while India has been placed at 12th position. In overall ranking China has been placed in the 'low' category with 33rd position.

• This index released on the basis of 14 indicators under 4 parameters Green House Gas Emissions (40%), Renewable Energy (20%) Energy Use (20%) and Climate Policy (20%).
