Diadromous fishes

  • Diadromous fishes migrate between freshwater and saltwater.
  • A study on these fishes was published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology.
    • 62% of the marine protected areas for these fishes do not correspond to their core habitats.
    • Only 55% of the core habitats of these fishes are under marine protected areas.
    • The scientists studied 11 diadromous fishes; which include-
    • Allis shad, twaite shad, Mediterranean twaite shad, European eel, European flounder, river lamprey, sea lamprey, Atlantic salmon, sea trout, thinlip mullet and smelt.
  • The Living Planet Index of the year 2024 has recorded a sharp decline in the number of these fishes.
