Earth Bio Genome Project: EBP

  • This is a global effort in which DNA mapping of all plants, wildlife, fungi and other micro-organisms found on earth will be done. It was started in the year 2018.
  • It has targeted DNA mapping of 1.8 million known species over 10 years and genome sequencing of about 3000 species by the year 2022.
  • Genome sequencing will help in reducing the loss of biodiversity, adapting food crops to climate change and sequencing unicellular organisms.
  • Various reports have projected the loss of about 50% of biodiversity by the end of this century due to climate change and global warming. Therefore, a digital library of DNA sequencing of wild fauna and flora is essential.
