Gandhmardan Hill Range

  • The Government of Odisha has declared the Gandhamardan mountain range located in Bargarh and Balangir districts as a Biodiversity Heritage Site.
  • It is the third biodiversity heritage site of Odisha after Mandsuru Gorge in Kandhamal district and Mahendragiri mountain range in Gajapati district.
  • The Nrisimhanatha temple situated on the northern slope of this mountain range and the Harishankar temple situated on the southern slope have immense cultural importance. Hiuen Tsang described these temples as a Buddhist heritage site named Parimalgiri.
  • In the 1980s, the then public sector Bharat Aluminum Company Limited started mining bauxite from Gandhamardan.
